9 Essential Tips For Becoming An Indispensable IT Employee

Reading Time: 4 minutes

As an IT employee, you’re often your company’s go-to person when something goes wrong with their computer network or infrastructure, as well as when business systems are slow or prone to crashing. That can be quite stressful, especially if you’re also tasked with keeping up with day-to-day operations and developing new programs and features to keep the business running efficiently. But if you want to become an indispensable IT employee who gets the most out of your position, here are six essential tips you should follow.

 1) Become a problem solver

The best way to become indispensable is to learn how to solve problems. When you find a problem, stop what you’re doing and try to fix it. Even if it’s not your job, this will look like dedication and initiative. And when you fix the problem, be sure to document what you did in case it happens again. As the old saying goes: The more often you save someone else’s bacon, the less likely they’ll be able to do without yours.

 2) Be proactive

Be proactive about your job. Always look for new and better ways to do your tasks and take on more responsibility, even if it means asking your boss. Build relationships with co-workers and peers to make connections that will help you in the long run, but also be careful not to come off as someone who is trying too hard to take credit. Keep a low profile at work so you don’t show any signs of being desperate or overeager. Make sure you are constantly learning; the world of technology is always changing, and it’s important to keep up with new developments to keep yourself marketable.

 3) Offer to help

I’m a former IT Manager who has been in the industry for over 14 years, and I want to offer my help. I have years of experience and knowledge that many things can be overlooked when first starting. These six tips will help you become an indispensable employee and will hopefully lead you to your dream job!

-Start with small projects- It is important to start small so you can learn the ropes quickly. Projects like updating the computer network or implementing new software upgrades are perfect tasks because they don’t require much training time. As long as you follow directions, complete your work efficiently, and ask questions, when necessary, it will show your employer that you take initiative and want to learn more about their company.

 4) Be a team player

Being a team player can help you be more indispensable to your employer. Here are six ways you can do that:

  • Always show up on time and ready to work.
  • Be professional in your interactions with people at work, even if you don’t like them.
  • Ask questions when there’s something you don’t understand or can’t figure out.
  • Do the work others aren’t doing–come in early, stay late, and take on the projects that no one wants to do.
  • Be proactive and proactively find solutions rather than waiting for someone else to tell you what needs to be done.

 5) Stay up to date

Stay current with new technologies, techniques, and trends. As the world of technology changes at a rapid pace, it can be difficult to keep up if you’re not paying attention. One way to stay on top of the latest in your field is by joining LinkedIn groups and participating in discussion forums where people are actively discussing these topics. Another option is to subscribe to blogs that are related to your industry or specific technologies you work with regularly. Not only does this help you become more knowledgeable about what’s happening in the field, but it also makes you feel connected as well!

Become an expert with the software programs that your company uses.

 6) Take initiative

As a member of the IT team, your job is more than just answering phone calls. You are responsible for maintaining the equipment and software that keep the business running smoothly. With that responsibility comes new opportunities to become indispensable to your employer. Here are six essential tips on how you can take initiative in your role and make a lasting impression with your skills

Always be willing to learn: As technology changes at a rapid pace, it’s important to stay up to date on the latest developments to be able to provide solutions when they’re needed. Read tech blogs and magazines, attend conferences, and get certified as often as possible.

 7) Have Faith in Yourself

No matter the industry, it is important to have faith in yourself. If you are not confident in your abilities, how can you expect others to believe in you? You should know that even if you make a mistake, there will be another opportunity to show what you can do. That’s why it is so important to always be on your best game.

 8) Engage With Your Company

Know your company’s goals. If you are a member of the IT team, it is important to know what your company’s goals are. This will help you prioritize and allocate resources as necessary to keep these goals in line. Be vocal with ideas and input. If you have any knowledge of ways to improve processes or systems within your company, make sure to share these ideas with upper management; they want to hear them! Engage with fellow employees when necessary. You may be the only person on the IT team who understands a specific process or system within your company; if this is the case, you must engage with other employees so that they can learn from you and vice versa 4. Network outside of work when possible.

 9) Be Up to date in Your Field

Be Up to date in Your Field. Keep up with the latest developments and new technologies in your field. You don’t have to be an expert, but you should know the basics of a range of topics. What is the newest programming language or technology? How does it work? What are its strengths and weaknesses? What’s coming next? You may not need to be able to answer these questions on your feet, but you should make sure that if someone asks them, you’re prepared. Know Your Tools. Whatever your job is, you need to know how to use the tools of your trade as well as any other tools that may be needed on a project-by-project basis.

It also means being able to work independently, getting along with co-workers and managing a high volume of work. These 9 tips will help you get started on the path to becoming indispensable in your organization.
