Overthinking – How To Over Come It?

What Is Overthinking?  

“You’re overthinking it,” has anyone ever told you? If that is the case, you are not alone. Even though we may not have characterised it as such, many of us are familiar with the experience of overthinking. “Overthinking” is a term that generally describes the process of thinking repeatedly and ineffectively. The distinction between “worry” about the future and “rumination” about the past and present has typically been made in the study since thoughts can be focused on a wide variety of various things. No matter what terminology we choose, we are referring to ongoing mental processes that don’t seem to have an end in sight.  

 Am I Overthinking?  

 One of the greatest things you possess as a person is a capacity for thought. As a result of the complicated mental processes that have developed in our brains, we are now able to comprehend information, solve problems, make plans for the future, and draw lessons from the past. Our ability to reason has helped us evolve as a species and build sophisticated communities.  

However, “too much of a good thing” is a cliche that springs to mind in this situation. We are undoubtedly thinking when we worry, overthink, or ruminate. The distinction between “over” thinking and “under” thinking emphasises that neither of these mental processes is productive or beneficial to us. As a result, you might be overthinking if you find yourself returning to the same problem repeatedly without finding a “solution.”  

 Overthinking And Decision-Making 

 You are most likely attempting to address a problem in your life when you are overthinking. “What career should I be pursuing? Do I belong in this relationship? ” What can I do to manage my money better?” The conundrum here is that overthinking impairs our capacity for decision-making. Rumination, according to research, hurts how people make decisions, making them harder for them to make and making them feel less confident in their choices 

 What Motivates Excessive Thinking? 

 You may be annoyed with yourself if you’ve read this far and realised you have a proclivity for overthinking. Why am I acting in such a negative way for myself? Here, two things must be kept in mind. Overthinking is fundamentally a form of automatic defence. 

 What do you frequently overthink? You are likely paying attention to important matters like your finances, health, job, relationships, and meaning in life. Feeling in charge of these various realms can give a sense of well-being, and you naturally desire the best for yourself. The important thing to remember is that thinking about these areas ineffectively doesn’t do much to help them. We don’t purposefully overthink. 

 How Can I Stop Overthinking? 

 1.Relax:

A vicious cycle can be created by overthinking because it can both energise us and make us feel anxious and have the opposite effect, making us worry even more. By employing relaxation techniques, you can halt this cycle in its tracks. What kinds of activities do you find relaxing? Going for a walk, inhaling deeply, practising yoga, or watching an uplifting film could all be effective relaxation techniques. Take a step back and consider what you can do for yourself to relax if you become aware that you are tense.  2.Practice Mindfulness:

If you’re reading this, you may have realised that overthinking is a problem for you and are working to find a solution. Though, you don’t want to fall into the ironic trap of overthinking your overthinking. That’s where mindfulness comes into play. It takes practice to become mindful. However, the ability to recognise when you are overthinking may come with regular practice. Despite years of experimenting with different mindfulness techniques, I still overthink, but I’ve noticed that I can recognise it more quickly and put those thoughts on hold more readily. I could select more beneficial thought patterns when I step back from destructive thought patterns. 

 3.Get Some Perspective:

With the help of contemplative practises like mindfulness, we can take a step back from our train of thought to more clearly see where it is going. Stopping overthinking requires having the ability to look at our thoughts more objectively. Overanalysing can cause us to feel consumed by the problem we are concentrating on and make it difficult for us to see the bigger picture. The question “Will this issue still matter to me in a year, five years, etc.?” may be helpful to ask when you find yourself in this situation. 

4.Try Problem-Focused Thinking:

The question “Are these thoughts helpful to me?” might be instructive. When you are aware of when you are overthinking, you can stop, take a breath, and then choose how you want to proceed. Here, you have two choices. You conclude that the problem you are overanalysing is unimportant, and you direct your attention and resources elsewhere. You identify the issue that is the cause of your overthinking and create a plan of action to proactively address it. 

5.Talk It Out:

The phrase “thoughts are not facts” is a common adage in cognitive-behavioural therapy. The reason it’s so crucial to keep this in mind is that our beliefs about who we are, what has happened to us, and what lies ahead can feel like facts, such as “I am not a likeable person because I don’t like myself.” It can be beneficial to speak with trusted individuals as you begin to recognise the times when you’re thinking might not be accurate or reflect reality. Simply getting a second opinion can occasionally aid in reorienting your perspective. 

6.Go To Therapy:

The methods might be adequate for some people to stop overthinking. However, it may be worthwhile to consider consulting a mental health professional who specialises in an evidence-based treatment like cognitive-behavioural therapy if you are having trouble controlling your overthinking or suspect that your overthinking may be a factor in the mental health problems I mentioned, such as anxiety or depression.
